Wolves on Watch
Area: 36,568,054 km2
Percentage of Planet Surface: 6.77%
The largest and first settled continent on New Dusseldorf. Bismarck continent is home to the old capital Blau Berlin, the university city Saarland and the New Dusseldorf University, and also the former planetary military centre Saxony. Since the Clan Wolf Invasion the new city of Wolf Hoffnung has arisen as the capital and military hub of the clan occupied world.
Settled during the height of the Star League, the three original cities of Bismarck each feature underwater districts as well as their more conventional surface districts. Star League planning encouraged the use of underground transportation especially for logistics and supplies, leaving the surface for habitation and light traffic. The result is well laid out cities with abundant parkland , low pollution, and convenient facilities.
The majority of Bismarck Continent is dedicated to farming.
The areas surrounding the three cities (approximately 800km) are well tamed and cultivated land mostly used for field crop farming (wheat, corn, other grains, rice, etc). Vast swathes of relatively flat terrain, that were in some cases created by major earthwork projects. Many of these farms have been in operation since the time of the Star League, as have the large scale irrigation systems distributing water across these regions. The extent and efficiency of the three farming zones on Bismark continent means each one rivals the average food production capability of typical continent on contemporary Succession War era worlds. In these zones there are nature reserves, usually centred upon ‘inconvenient’ terrain (hills and mountains, canyons, etc) or around water reserves. These range from lightly managed to heavily managed in the case of the water supply areas.
The more outlying areas are dotted with rural communities and smaller farms. Far less effort has gone into earthworks in these areas, so the terrain is comprised of rolling hills for the most part. Smaller scale farms dominate the area, as these have proven better able to adapt to the uneven terrain. The main crop farms in the areas are orchards and vineyards, and farming of animals is very common. Plantations for logging are also common in this area.
Fish farms around the three cities are extensive. Many of these farms have been in operation since the time of the Star League. The cities also serve as ports for deep sea fishing fleets.
Lobster trapping, oyster farming, and similar are done at small scale by villages scattered around the coast. These villages maintain and operate fishing vessels for coastal fishing, as opposed to the big-buisness deep sea operations.
The centre of the continent, approximately 18% of the landmass, has been left over to forest and wilderness. Named Schwarzwald which translates as the Black Forest, this zone of true wilderness is named after a forest in the Terran country of Germany. The zone is kept as unmanaged and untouched as possible, with grudging exceptions made for automated weather monitoring stations.
Civilian access is allowed, but only to ‘qualified’ persons because the only vehicle access to the enormous forest is by VTOL, that there are no facilities of any kind within the zone, and that the wildlife can be dangerous.
